Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt with news anchor Walter Cronkite and his mother Helen Cronkite on Martha's Vineyard (1988)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Famed CBS news anchor, Walter Cronkite, leans forward while talking with renowned photographer, Alfred Eisenstaedt (Eisie). The woman sitting in between Cronkite and Eisenstaedt is Walter Cronkite's mother, Helen Cronkite. Both Cronkite and Eisenstaedt were long time summer residents on the island of Martha's Vineyard.

This social gathering took place on the outside patio of Walter Cronkite's home overlooking Edgartown Harbor. At the time, Cronkite and Eisenstaedt were discussing a book they were planning to do together about Martha's Vineyard, with Walter writing the text to accompany Eisie's Vineyard photographs. Shortly after this meeting, Walter Cronkite signed a contract to write his autobiography with Ballantive Books, and had to place the Eisenstaedt/Cronkite collaboration on hold. Eisenstaedt's health deteriorated the year after this photo - so the Eisenstaedt/Cronkite book never came to fruition.

Cronkite and Eisenstaedt knew of each other, but had never socialized together before this meeting. The meeting was arranged by William Waterway Marks, the founding publisher/editor of Martha's Vineyard Magazine. Both Cronkite and Eisenstaedt were selected as feature cover stories in Martha's Vineyard Magazine by Marks when he was the publisher.
