Summary[edit]
DescriptionAll Saints' Church, Brompton by Sawdon - geograph.org.uk - 43405.jpg |
English: All Saints' Church, Brompton by Sawdon. Brompton by Sawdon probably owes its existence to the many springs that come to the surface near these ponds. This photograph is looking north into the next square. These ponds (two of three mill ponds in the village) have springs coming up into them and are known as, 428681.
There are also springs coming up in the grounds of Brompton Hall (home of Sir George Cayley see below) that feed into the upper of these two ponds by means of a culvert under the lane by the church. Other springs come to the surface in the third mill pond from which, at one time, the village drew its water supply. The church was the location for the wedding of the poet William Wordsworth who in 1802 married Mary Hutchinson, of nearby Gallows Hill.
See also this photograph of the church, 426956. To see a photograph taken from 426825 running in front of the church and looking back (southerly) toward this viewpoint, click here 43376. |
