Spent cones of Alder, one partly stripped to show structure

Summary[edit]

Description
English: According to the nomenclature preferred, these are female cones, catkins, or strobili of an unidentified Alder species. Alnus being a dicotyledonous genus, these cones are not closely homologous with strobili of sporophytes, and arguably not with Gymnosperms, but more closely match the inflorescence or infructescences of say, Casuarina or Humulus

Alnus is not local here; these cones were from a garden plant
