| Description |
English: Alongside Shepherd's Gutter, Brook Wood, New Forest In the grassy clearing beyond the trees commoners' cattle are grazing and ruminating. The tree in silhouette on the left is a very old oak pollard which has lost a number of its limbs. Pollarding (lopping the trunk off at head height) extends the life of oak trees, although the original intention usually was to produce firewood more rapidly. |
