Summary[edit]

Description Ambrotypes were popular from 1854 to 1865 when it was replaced with the tintype and other photo processes. Ambrotypes were produced by creating a negative on ruby colored glass or clear glass that was painted black (japanned) on the back side. This one was done on clear glass and painted black on the back. The black paint has started to peel off. I placed some black paper behind the ambrotype and it did a good job of hiding the peeling paint. I was told that all these Ambrotypes came from the same Trenton, New Jersey estate.
