Summary[edit]

Description
English: While riding on the Amtrak crescent in October 2023 and passing through the City of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, we saw this little engine. This is Hercules Powder Co. No. 21, a 0-4-0F "fireless" steam locomotive that was built by the Heisler Locomotive Works of Erie, Pennsylvania, in March 1935. It was one of two locomotives that worked for the Hercules Powder Company, an explosives manufacturer, at its Hattiesburg, Mississippi, plant. To operate in such a flammable environment the two "fireless" steam locomotives were charged with steam from the plant boilers to run smoothly with increased safety. It would work at the plant from 1946 to 1958 until it was eventually replaced by a diesel locomotive. After being retired, it was donated to the City of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1968. Today No. 21 can be seen on static display next to the Hattiesburg train station along with a former passenger coach and another steam locomotive, Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern No. 300.
