An arboreal Bengal Monitor

Summary[edit]

Description
English: It was late afternoon and the sun was shining bright. The black rumped flame back was busy

foraging the tree from ground towards canopy to feed on insects under the bark. As they make hopping movements around branches, they often conceal themselves from potential predators. However, this day was not that easy to conceal, as predator was none other than an arboreal common Indian monitor…. Bengal monitors or common Indian monitor are mainly terrestrial and hunt on the ground but some large adults can ascend vertical tree trunks. They remain active whole day and climb trees normally to stalk on roosting bats but this day was showing up a different scene. This solitary lizard was busy climbing the tree probably to feed on eggs laid by flame back as it was January the start of breeding season for them. The hide and seek game went on for a good time and finally flame back forced the monitor to climb down and disappear in woods. I was lucky enough to witness one such rare event noticing

the arboreal skills of monitor lizards otherwise, they are terrestrial more than often….
