Summary[edit]
DescriptionAndrew Eshelman House aka Birch Lawn, Clarence, New York - 20201005.jpg |
English: Birch Lawn, 6020 Goodrich Road, Clarence, New York, October 2020. Located in the heart of the hamlet of Clarence Center, the house functions almost as a crash course on the Stick school of architecture that was popular in the mid- to late 19th century (this house is a relatively late example, having been built in 1885). The decorative wooden "stick work" that lends the style its name manifests itself loud and proud - witness the intricately carved columns on the front porch, the brightly painted moldings framing the windows, and the sunburst pattern in the truss on the front gable - while the rustic clapboard siding, cross-gabled roof, and slender verticality build on the preexisting Carpenter Gothic style while simultaneously pointing the way to the Queen Anne style that would come to the forefront around the turn of the century. Birch Lawn's longtime owner was Andrew Eshelman (1846-1937), a scion of almost inarguably Clarence Center's most prominent family at the time; he was a merchant who, with his father Jacob, co-owned the J. Eshelman and Company dry goods store just a couple doors away - at the time Erie County's largest such commercial enterprise outside Buffalo - and also served a term as the local postmaster. The house has been nominated as a town landmark by the Clarence Historic Preservation Commission. |
