Summary[edit]
DescriptionAnna Pavlova (12230237264).jpg |
On 12 February 1881 Anna Pavlova was born in Ligovo, Russia. She became the principal ballerina of the Imperial Russian ballet and one of the most famous ballerina's in history. Her signature role was that of the ‘Dying Swan’, (originally The Swan) choreographed for her by Mikhail Fokine in 1905 to Camille Saint-Saëns's cello solo Le Cygne (The Swan) from Le Carnaval des Animaux (The Carnival of the Animals) as a pièce d'occasion (for a special occasion). The short ballet follows the last moments in the life of a swan, and was first presented in St. Petersburg, Russia. Pavlova was said to have performed the role over 4000 times during her life. Pavolva founded her own dance company and travelled extensively giving performances all over the world, to the delight of her fans who called themselves the ‘Pavlovatzi’. She eventually settled in the UK, and died in 1931 at the age of 49. In 1926 Pavlova toured New Zealand with a troupe of 50 dancers and a 22-member orchestra. She gave 38 performances in 39 days throughout the country. In honour of her visit, a meringue dessert was created and named the ‘Pavlova’. This dessert became an iconic staple of New Zealand and Australian cuisine. For many years however, the exact circumstances of the creation of the Pavlova dessert were unclear, leading to much debate and trans-Tasman rivalry over its country of origin. In 2008, however, academic Helen Leach confirmed that the Pavlova was in fact created by a chef in a Wellington hotel, New Zealand. This programme from Pavlova’s 1926 tour was kept as a souvenir by Frank David Thomson. Thomson was a career public servant and statesman who was Private Secretary to a succession of Prime Ministers from 1901 to 1926, and was the first permanent head of the Prime Minister's Department from 1926 to 1934. Thomson amassed a large collection of items from his career, including photographs, menus, programmes, booklets, and newspaper clippings. These items are held together in F D Thomson series, which is listed on Archway at the following link: www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewEntity.do?code=W3920
