Description
This portrait is unfinished and its sitter, previously thought to be Eliza Bonaparte (1777 - 1820), has not been identified. The canvas was first used to sketch the beginning of a composition later abandoned: a figure of a naked man can still be seen under the paint surface. Both compositions are not necessarily by the same hand. It was once attributed to Jacques-Louis David and has been claimed as both French and Italian.[1]
