Object history

1543: transferred to Elizabeth of Austria (1526-1545), Kraków (?)

1642: transferred to Anna Catherine Constance Vasa, Neuburg an der Donau (?)
Notes Although consdiered as owned by Anna of Austria (1528-1590), Duchess of Bavaria and created around 1550, the jewel was not included in Anne's Book of Jewels (Kleinodienbuch der Herzogin Anna von Bayern) from 1552-1555. Two wives of Sigismund II Augustus, two wives of Sigismund III and the first wife of Ladislaus IV were from the House of Austria, hence many similar items were undoubtedly in the collection of the Polish monarchs. In 1543, Elizabeth of Austria (1526-1545) was presented with a "diamond eagle with rubies" (orzeł dyamentowy z rubinami) by Emperor Charles V on the occasion of her marriage with Sigismund II Augustus of Poland. Inventory of the jewels of Polish princess Anna Catherine Constance Vasa, daughter of Constance of Austria, include a "White eagle, having a coat of arms on his cheast at which two rubies, all set with diamonds, with three hanging pearls" (Orzeł biały, herb na sercu mający, przy którym dwa rubiny a inne wszystkie dyamenty, ze trzema wiszącymi perłami) valued at 1200 thalers. Identification by Marcin Latka (Artinpl).
