English: Portrait of a Young Prince or a Court Dwarf, formerly identified as Carlos, Prince of Asturias (1545-1568) and Henry of Nassau-Dillenburg (1550–1574).

"Das Bildnis hat eine kontrovers geführte Deutungsgeschichte hinter sich, ohne dass bislang eine allgemein anerkannte Lösung gefunden worden wäre. Zunächst wurde in dem Gemälde ein Porträt des spanischen Infanten Don Carlos vermutet (Kat. Kassel 1888, S. 30; Frerichs 1947, S. 50). Später sah man darin ein Bildnis eines Hofnarren (Kat. Brügge 1953, Nr. 106; Groeneveld 1981, S. 110), dann wieder ein Porträt eines unbekannten fürstlichen Knaben (Schnackenburg 1996, S. 191). Schließlich wurde in dem Werk ein Porträt Heinrichs von Oranien-Nassau (1550–1574) gesehen, dem jüngsten Bruder Willems von Oranien, dessen Porträt sich ebenfalls in der Gemäldegalerie befindet (Kat. Lemgo/Kassel 1997, S. 262). Jüngst wurde dagegen wieder vorgeschlagen, einen "Kleinwüchsigen" dargestellt zu sehen, den man mit dem spanischen Hofnarren Domingo de Polonia identifizierte (Haag, Sabine [Hrsg.] 2015, S. 20–23).
