Title
La morte di Priamo
Description
English: This is one of the scenes depicting episodes of classic epic poetry for which Canova draws on Cesarotti's translations of Homer's works. This episode is the only one from the Aeneid, but it is also related to the events reported by Homer in the Iliad. The sculptor completely renounces narration by eliminating all the decorative elements and concentrating entirely on rendering the event in a concise manner, in order to represent the classical spirit that is the source of his art.
This bas-relief has a dramatic quality created by powerful gestures. Among the characters, we are struck by the discreet woman stiacciato (low relief) that stands out from the background, arms stretched to the sky and the head thrown back. Unquestionably inspired by the images of people in mourning in the countless Lamentations on the dead Christ.
