Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Appomattox Statue, also affectionaly known as "Appy", is a memorial to the Confederate soldiers from Alexandria, Virginia who fought for the Confederate States of America. The statue, created by sculptor M. Caspar Buberi, was erected on May 24, 1899 by the Robert E. Lee camp of the United Confederate Veterans. The form of a soldier was designed by John Adams Elder after his painting of the same title showing a lone Confederate soldier gazing over a battlefield after the Battle of Appomattox Court House. Shortly afterwards, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House. The statue is at the intersection of Prince and South Washington streets in Historic Alexandria on a very busy street. Originally, the over 20 foot statue and base were surrounded by a far larger fenced in plot of land which significantly decreased as the city 's traffic increased. The location of the statue is where the area where soldiers from Alexandria mustered before marching off to join Confederate forces on May 24, 1861.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 100001066.
