Meer informatie In de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw was Gouda de armste stad van Nederland. Veel arme Gouwenaars durfden zich niet meer in de Sint-Janskerk te vertonen. Ze waren ongeschoold en konden de kerkdienst nauwelijks volgen. In 1842 richtte een speciale commissie deze kerk voor hen op, die al snel de Armenkerk werd genoemd. De armen die de kerk bezochten, kregen een blikken plaatje en tegen inlevering daarvan kregen zij van de Diaconie een hogere uitkering. Daarom werd de kerk druk bezocht. Dit gebeurde tot na de eerste wereldoorlog. Daarna werd de kerk onder de naam Kleine Kerk nog gebruikt tot 1953.
