Summary[edit]

Description

national bank of denmark, copenhagen, 1961-1978. architect: arne jacobsen, 1901-1971. final stages completed by architects dissing+weitling.

what is potentially most offensive about the national bank is the fact that it is a monument to power, not to democracy, but to one of the great institutions of power which predates democracy in denmark by centuries, the treasury.

and these old institutions in copenhagen are infamous for being closed and elitist, sovereign, arrogant - to some degree untouched by the values of democracy.

they were born of an autocratic government in love with colonization, suppression, and perpetual warfare.

they were born of a country which has been at war for 300 years of its history. a country whose occupation of norway is known there as the 400 year night.

such is the inescapable history of denmark and such is the inescapable fate of architecture: an accomplice to power.

I toured the bank a long time ago when my aunt worked there. we were seated in the elegant office of some top guy. nobody knows the true price of this building, he said and continued jokingly: we could only do it because we built the printing press first.

this place is a palace, he said, it is the last palace that will ever be built in denmark.
