Summary[edit]

Description

Artur Grottger's grave at the Łyczakowski Cemetery in Lviv.

Artur Grottger (1837-1867) was a drawer, painter and an exceptional representative of romanticism in Polish art. He is best known for his black and white drawing cycles devoted to the January Uprising (1863). The cycles entitled Warsaw, Polonia, Lithuania, War do not portray specific historical scenes but symbolically show the National tragedy. Their patriotic atmosphere evoked a great interest in Grottger’s art – reproductions of the pieces could have been found in almost every house in Poland. The rest of Grottger’s art is less popular – he also created generic, historical and battle-pieces as well as drawn and painted portraits.
