British anchor. Constructed by WL Byers & Co. Ltd., Sunderland (UK). Left-handed swastika anchor, which was used as the symbol for the printing company until the Nazis adopted it.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The "Byers anchor," manufactured by Byers in Sunderland, Great Britain, from the late 19th century to the 1960s, was used by the British Royal Navy. It features a swastika, originally a symbol of luck and eternity in various religions. However, it later acquired a different meaning due to its association with the German Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. The swastika was the trademark/logo of Byers, representing good fortune according to Hindu beliefs. It's a historical reference rather than a symbol of evil.
  • More information about the anchor company can be found at http://www.searlecanada.org/sunderland/sunderland212.html.
  • The Military History Museum of the Canary Islands (Museo Histórico Militar de Canarias) , located within the Almeyda Fort in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, was established in 1988. Initially named the Regional Military Museum of the Canary Islands, it was later renamed. The museum is housed in the Almeyda Fort, strategically built after a failed English attack in 1797, to defend the city's north and west sides. Construction lasted from 1859 to 1884, coinciding with advancements in artillery that rendered the fort's original purpose obsolete.
