Collage d'une sélection de graphismes en pixel art “16 bits”, extraits de la scène démo de l'Atari ST (ordinateur 16/32 bits).
Toutes ces images d'exemple proviennent du graphiste Jovis sur la période 1989-1994 (l'âge d'or puis la fin de cette machine).
La palette est de 16 couleurs maximum (parfois moins, comme 8, 4 ou 2), parmi 512 seulement (moins que l'Amiga : 32 sur 4096).
La résolution est de 320 × 200 pixels (plein écran du mode 1, sans overscan ni scrolling), où des tilesets 8 × 8 apparaissent.

Ce type de réalisations, très riche en lissage et tramage manuels, préfigurait déjà les outils d'infographie modernes (2D/3D).
Les résolutions et nombres de couleurs croissants facilitèrent les conversions semi-automatiques, à partir de dessins “tradi”.
À partir de 1995, les graphismes en 256 couleurs étant omniprésents, la manipulation au point par point devint trop “ingrate”.
Ce qui fit délaisser les techniques manuelles de pixel art, pour leur préférer celles adaptées aux créations 32-bit actuelles.

Seules les figures imposées les plus graphiques sont représentatives ici de la scène démo : “fontes”, logos, sprites et fonds.
La performance des effets codés (vitesse, nombre, variété…) aura longtemps profité des limitations constitutives du pixel art.
