Summary[edit]

Description
English: This Gas Lamp, located in Atlanta's Underground, was 1 of 50 erected by the Atlanta Gas Light Company in 1856. It was shelled by Union artillery prior to the Battle of Atlanta of the American Civil War. Solomon (Sam) Luckie, 1 of 40 free blacks in Atlanta, was leaning against this lamp talking with a group of white businessmen when a cannon shell wounded him. The businessmen carried him to their local surgeon where he died from his wounds. Sam had owned the Barber and Bath Salon, in the nearby Atlanta Hotel. Luckie Street was named for him. The Gas Lamp was relighted during the premier of Gone With the Wind in 1939. There are two bronze plaques mounted on it. It simultaneously commemorates Solomon (Sam) Luckie, the Confederacy, the Battle of East Atlanta, and one of the local men who fought in that battle. [1]
