Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 1396 Built 1951 The Ashton was an experimental jet airliner and was never intended for commercial use. It was based on the fuselage design of the Avro Tudor piston engine airliner but fitted with four Rolls-Royce Nene engines, mounted in pairs under the wings. This is the second of the six built and is based on the airframe which was originally registered with the Civil Aviation Authority as Tudor 2 ‘G-AJJW’ (c/n 1396). She flew on trials work until retired in February 1962 and was then broken up. The fuselage was used for ground instruction by the Blind Landing Experimental Unit at Farnborough and then passed to Hawker Siddeley at Dunsfold in 1975, where she had a new career training Police dogs. She was rescued in 1980 by the Wales Aircraft Museum at Cardiff Airport and after arrival she was repainted in BOAC colours. She moved on when the museum was permanently closed, first to the Avro Heritage Society at Woodford in 1995 and then to Newark in February 2003. This is the only surviving section of any Ashton.
