Summary[edit]

Description: The British Museum, Room 16 - Bassae Sculpture,

The display shows the sculptures from the temple of Apollo Epikourios ('Helper') at Bassae in Arcadia. The twenty three surviving blocks of the frieze from the interior of the temple are exhibited on an upper level. They show battles between Lapiths and Centaurs and between Greeks and Amazons, and were carved around 420 - 400BC. Fragments from the metopes - relief panels originally on the outside of the building - are displayed at ground level. The subjects of these are difficult to identify.
