Summary[edit]

Description
English: The EM1, as it was originally known, was a Sir Nigel Gresley design with the prototype being built at Doncaster works in 1941. It was later loaned to the Dutch railways between 1947 and 1952. During this period she was known as ‘Tommy’ after the nickname given to British soldiers in WW2. The nickname stuck and the class were known as ‘Tommys’ throughout their career. The type ran on 1.5KV DC and was specifically designed for the Woodhead Line.

26020 was built at Gorton Works in 1951, she was fitted with Stainless Steel handrails and appeared at the Festival of Britain. Renumbered 76020 under the TOPS system, she was finally withdrawn in 1977. On display in the Great Hall at the National Railway Museum, York.
