Summary[edit]
DescriptionBanavie locks (26555062488).jpg |
The canal locks at Banavie, near Fort William, Scotland are known as Neptune's Staircase. Built between 1803 and 1822 the series of locks is the longest in Britain. They take shipping from sea level at Loch Linnhe up 64 feet (20m) to the Caledonian Canal which cuts North Eastwards 60 miles (97 Km) all the way to Inverness, through Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy. In the background of the picture is Britain's highest Mountain, Ben Nevis which rises to more than 4400 feet (1340m) and is only 4 miles away from sea level. The photo was taken in the late 1970's using a Nikkormat FTn and 50mm f2.0 AI lens. Film would have been Kodachrome. |
