Summary[edit]
DescriptionBarium-Colonic Perforation (49750169036).jpg |
Barium leakage associated with colonic perforation. The barium crystals appear much smaller than those seen in other cases (see other examples of barium in this Atlas). Some of the crystals have aggregated to form relatively large, tan structures. The last image was taken with polarized light and shows very faint/weak birefringence (compare with other polarized images of barium sulphate in this Atlas). Barium sulfate can be formed in various shapes such as planar, starred, or spherical structures depending on the formulation. Perhaps the crystal shape is a determinant of birefringence .
