Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Barton cement plant Shown are the third (right) and fourth piers of the rotary kiln that operated here 1912 to 1927. The structure in the foreground is one of three oval slurry mixers. The cement plant was built in 1891 by Skelsey’s Adamant Cement Co. Ltd., which was acquired in 1912 by the company that became Blue Circle. Chalk was brought to the plant from the New Quarry ([TA00672231]) by a tramway across the Ings and combined in a 4:1 ratio with clay from the adjacent pit to make the raw mix.
