Battle of La Albuera – 16 May 1811 – Monument to General Castaños

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Proportionally to the casualties, the Battle of La Albuera (May 16, 1811) ranks among the bloodiest military engagements provoked by the napoléonic régime. Moved by such a brutality, the "Cortes de Cádiz" decided as early as June 1811 to erect a commemorative monument, while the country was still occupied by napoléonic troops – that Portugal had been freed just a few days before raised hope for a liberation of Spain as well.

However, the project suffered innumerable delays, to be finally entrusted to the "Comisión de Monumentos de Badajoz" and eventually inaugurated on June 26, 1854. As to the delays, note the date 1832 on the frontispiece.

Cartouche :
the cartouche below the bust is to be read as : "Mandó em [en] Gefe [Jefe] Beresford".

► Commemorative plaque 1986 : a plaque, affixed above the cartouche on May 16, 1986 by the "United States College for International Studies" and the "Wellington Society – Madrid", read (the plaque has, since then, been removed) : "A la memoria de los soldados ingleses, portugueses y españoles, que derrotaron a las tropas de Napoleón en la Batalla de La Albuera. Las tropas del Ejercito Aliado, a las ordenes de los Generales Castaños, Beresford y Blake, derrotaron al mariscal Soult, que se dirigía con sus tropas hacia Badajoz, para levantar el sitio de la ciudad, el 16 de Mayo de 1811".
Only its mark on the stone and the four bolts remain.

► Commemorative plaque 2001 : another plaque, affixed below the cartouche on May 13, 2001 by the "Asociación napoleónica española" to commemorate the reenactment of the Battle on its 190th anniversary, has also gone. The plaque has, since then, been removed ; only the holes in the stone remain.
