Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Bełchatów coal mine is a large open-pit extraction facility in Poland, in operation since 1955. It represents one of the largest coal reserves in Poland having estimated reserves of 1,930 million tonnes of lignite coal. This image, acquired on 17 April 2020 by a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite, shows the status of the plant, with two active sites of extraction in the middle of the caves, as well as the adjacent power plant. The air quality of the area can be evaluated with products from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS): it provides, among other things, consistent and quality-controlled information related to air pollution and health, greenhouse gases and climate forcing.
