English: Memorial to beached whales in Florence Oregon. "On June 16, 1979, forty-one sperm whales beached themselves here on the Oregon coast for reasons which may never be known. These mighty giants have roamed the world's oceans for over fifty million years. They are the deepest divers of any mammal, communicate by voice over vast distances, and have the largest brains of any animal on Earth. We share the planet with these intelligent species and must be ever aware of our dependence upon the environment in which they live. We say goodbye to you, forty-one. May your passing serve to strengthen our resolve to stop the senseless killing of your kind. Greenplace Foundation Eugene, Oregon" |
