Summary[edit]
DescriptionBeech pollard and pollarded holly, Warwick Slade, New Forest - geograph.org.uk - 151079.jpg |
English: Beech pollard and pollarded holly, Warwick Slade, New Forest Evidence of pollarding from very different ages in this scene from the woodland alongside the track to Holidays Hill Cottage and car park. The big beech tree is a mature pollard - it its youth it was cut off above head height to provide new growth, either to create browse that could be cut for the deer, or to provide a quick-growing source of fuelwood. The holly pollards are very recent, and the cut branches have been grazed of their leaves and the bark stripped from the wood by hungry ponies and deer. |
