Description
English:

Oak heraldic bench end, late 15th.c., Bere Ferrers Church, Devon. Arms of Robert Willoughby, 1st Baron Willoughby de Broke (d.1502). Quarterly of 4:

  • 1: Quarterly of 4, with a crescent on the fess-point for difference:
    • 1&4: Sable, a cross engrailed or (Ufford, here shown as a cross crosslet double crossed; The Bere Ferrers bench ends, where perhaps the wood disallows great detail in carving, shows not a cross engrailed but rather a thick plain cross);
    • 2&3: Gules, a cross moline argent (Beke);
  • 2: A cross fleurie (Latimer, possibly Paveley of Broke);
  • 3: Four fusils in fess each charged with an escallop (Cheyne);
  • 4: Or, a chevron gules a bordure engrailed sable (Stafford of Hooke and Southwick); Alice Stafford, daughter of Sir Humphrey Stafford (d.1442) of Southwick, Wilts and Hook, Dorset, "With the Silver Hand", married Sir Edmond Cheney, of Broke, Wilts, and by him had two daughters, Elizabeth Cheney and Anne Cheney, the latter of whom was the mother of Robert Willoughby
