Summary[edit]

Description

This monument was erected in remembrance of the sacrifice of numerous young men fallen during the First World War. At the same time, it also represents the centre of the new and modern Bergamo, the one that was created in the early XX Century outside the walls, featuring wide and open spaces. The square below is used to host the most significant official ceremonies, such as the celebration for the Republic Day, on June 2nd, or the Guardia di Finanza Cadets Oath. The Memorial Tower (“Torre dei Caduti” in Italian) stands in a central place for Bergamo citizens: if you visit the city during weekends or holidays, you are likely to see the square and the streets filled with market stalls, displaying local products, candies and handicrafts. Also several Fairs take place here, such as the Book Fair or the most anticipated event in October, the Fair gathering merchants from all over the world. The famous speech held by the General Diaz, leader of the Italian army announcing the victory and the end of the First World War, demonstrates the original use of the Tower as a symbol of collective memory. The marble statues of the façade refer to the Roman history and inspire a sense of sacredness. Going up inside, instead, the atmosphere is more intimate and contemplative. The names of the many young men from Bergamo died during the War are written in gold over the black walls.
