Summary[edit]

Description

William McAlpine’s former London and North Eastern Railway rebuilt Gresley 4-6-2 ‘A3’ class locomotive number 4472 FLYING SCOTSMAN passes through Bescar Lane station en route to Southport

Bescar Lane signal box was located by the Down Main line at the Southport end of Bescar Lane station, and was a Saxby and Farmer Type 9 design built for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1878. The original 27 lever Saxby and Farmer frame was relocked with tappet locking on on 2nd July 1914 and was replaced with a 15 lever London Midland Region Standard frame by British Railways. The box was closed on 9th May 1993 when the level crossing was converted to an automatic half-barrier crossing and the absolute block section was extended to between Burscough Bridge Junction and Southport Chapel Street signal boxes

14 signal (Down Main Home) protects Bescar Lane level crossing and is carried on a London MIdland and Scottish Railway right hand bracket on a lattice main stem
