| Description |
English: Built in 1903, this Gothic Revival-style building was constructed for the congregation of Bethlehem Baptist Church, an African-American church that formed from a split between the black and white members of the First Baptist Church congregation in 1868. The building features a red brick exterior, gothic arched bays with stained glass windows and doors with gothic arched transoms, two towers, reminiscent of an obelisk and a pyramid, respectively, clad in wooden shingles, with the taller, obelisk-like tower featuring multiple dormers and a pyramidal hipped roof, rose windows not he gable ends, and a modern one-story rear building that houses additional spaces for the congregation. The building is a contributing structure in the College Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The building today remains in use by the Bethlehem Baptist Church congregation. |
