Description
Español: La Biblioteca Pública de Tarragona, de titularidad estatal y gestionada por la Generalitat de Cataluña, fue creada en 1846 a raíz de las desamortizaciones eclesiásticas, con el fin de custodiar y conservar los fondos bibliográficos procedentes de los monasterios de Santes Creus, Poblet y otras órdenes monásticas de la provincia. Del valioso fondo patrimonial que conserva destacan los 318 manuscritos (s. X-XVIII), 230 incunables, 401 volúmenes de la Biblioteca del virrey Pedro Antonio de Aragón (s. XVII) y cerca de 35.000 volúmenes de los siglos XVI al XIX. Tras varias ubicaciones, en 1962 se trasladó al actual edificio en el cruce entre el Carrer Gasómetre y el Carrer Fortuny. Se ha remodelado en varias fases los años 1986, 1992, 2000 y 2005, en una readaptación continuada de los espacios, del mobiliario y de la organización.
