Summary[edit]
DescriptionBig white golf ball - geograph.org.uk - 1440896.jpg |
English: Big white golf ball A recent (autumn 2007) addition to the scenery on Munduff Hill is this radar head mounted inside a white geodesic dome which sits on top of a green-painted steel tower. It is a Rain Radar, erected by the Ministry of Defence on behalf of the Meteorological Office. Its purpose is to monitor rainfall and provide data to aid the forecasting of rainfall events and also to model flood risks within the local area and beyond. The radar is part of a network of 16 stations set up across the UK. A prominent object on the hilltop, it is seen by some local residents as an ugly blot on the landscape. It has, however, a potential beneficial effect. Weather radars cannot work work efficiently in the vicinity of wind turbines because their blades cause too much interference. So the Bishop Hill area should be spared from windfarm encroachment for the foreseeable future. |
