Summary[edit]

Description

12 frame ChemCam Remote MicroImager observation of the "Bloodstone Hill" outcrop, a light-toned, clay-bearing ridge exposed along the western flanks of Mt. Sharp. These images were taken on Sols 1955 and 1957. This outcrop occurs near the upper contact of the Clay Trough bedrock unit, which contains mudstones formed in a relatively habitable environment (long-lasting, near-neutral bodies of water). The more deeply red rocks in the background belong to the Sulfate Unit, which contain rocks that were likely deposited as the environment shifted to more acidic and arid conditions.

This mosaic was taken to study an outcrop in detail from a distance. ChemCam uses a small telescope to collect the light produced by laser zaps on the rock to understand their composition. This telescope is often repurposed to study outcrops in the near-distance, where the resolution exceeds that of orbital imagery, but where Curiosity will never traverse by. The RMI images are monochromatic, but can be colorized if MastCam images were also taken.
