Description

Part of the <a href="http://www.soundtransit.org/Projects-and-Plans/STart-Public-Art-Program.xml" rel="nofollow">STart program</a>, "Blue Lights Over Duwamish" by Norie Sato and Dan Corson is a glowing blue line of lights on <a href="http://www.soundtransit.org/x78.xml?curID=x9880" rel="nofollow">the bridge</a>. Trains crossing the Duwamish River trigger the lights which create a lightshow that plays off the bridge and the water below. The lights are on for about 15 second prior to the train's approach and about 15 more after the train has cleared the bridge.

Let me emphasize that this (SR-99 overpass) is a horrible place to shoot. The sidewalk is narrower than I'd like, traffic drives by at a quick pace, the bridge wobbles making long exposures difficult (both of these shots were at 8 seconds). It was also raining when I took these shots. The rain added great texture to the water, but the texture was eliminated due to the long exposure. As I was packing up, a Gillig passed by at a reasonable speed and had I not been holding on to it, my umbrella would've flown into the river and taken the tripod that the umbrella was mounted on with it.
