Summary
[edit]DescriptionBog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum) - geograph.org.uk - 876004.jpg |
English: Bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum) This yellow-starred flower is a member of the lily family and grows in acid peat bogs such as here on Carningli Common. It turns bright orange as it fruits and was once used as a colourant, like saffron, and as a hair dye. Its specific name 'ossifragum' means bone-breaking in accord with the tradition that it caused brittle bones in grazing animals. This is dismissed as an old wives' tale, the animals' poor health being more likely attributable to the lack of calcium in the acid land. But as always, the old wives were not so wrong: ingestion of Bog Asphodel has now been shown to cause kidney disease in cattle and photosensitivity in lambs. |
