DescriptionBothriolepis canadensis, armoured division.jpg |
English: Well-prepared carapace of a placoderm or early jawed fish called Bothriolepis seen in a Quebec gift shop. The small fauna or more durable parts of larger creatures at Miguasha are of exceptional quality.
Miguasha Provincial Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) lies on the south side of the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec. It is considered to be one of the world's most important paleontological sites for fossils. For instance, 5 out 6 major fish groups of the Devonian are found here, including 1000s of Bothriaolepsis. Poor swimmers, armored placoderms are the only extinct major group of fishes not around today. Or so they say, but let's not forget the much larger living fossil coelacanth recently recovered from the depths of deep time... |
