Bridge at Monticello, Maine on U.S. Route 1 over the North Branch of the Meduxnekeag River

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Bridge at Monticello, Maine on U.S. Route 1 over the North Branch of the Meduxnekeag River. From a picture postcard circa 1907. The curved bridge was infamous for loss of lives from vehicle accidents, causing some to plunge into the Meduxnekeag River. The current bridge was built in the 1970s when the Maine Department of Transportation/MaineDOT, after many complaints and concern by Maine citizens, decided to build a wider and straight bridge in the same location, which reduced accidents significantly along the crossing. The image is from Danny Finnemore, who gave me permission to use it for any purpose.
