Summary[edit]

Description
English: The future may look bright, but don't be fooled. Brightness can hide things just like darkness can.

When 2020 ended, I saw a lot of people clamouring for a better 2021. The COVID-19 vaccines were on their way, marking the light at the end of the tunnel. But we have forgotten that light can blind, just as much as it can bring sight. That light had us blinded as 2021 went off to a really rough start.

The future is always described as being dark or being bright. We think of dark futures as bad and bright futures as good. Don't be fooled: the only thing that is certain about the future is that it's uncertain. The darkness and the light conceal what is up ahead. A dark future may provide revitalizing spiritual renewal. A bright future may bring your entire life crashing down around you.

Don't be obsessed about the future. The future is uncertain, and no amount of worrying or paranoia on your end will ever keep you safe. There are enough problems to worry about today. Live life one day at a time. When walking down the tunnel, don't stare at the light at the end. Look down at the ground in front of you so that you don't trip on the rock. Look around you to see if others need some help. The light and the darkness of the future will blind you to what's immediately going on around you.

For those simply wishing for the pandemic to end, I have an alternate philosophy for you to consider. What can you do *now*? Is there someone you haven't talked to for years? Pick up the phone and call them. Is a local charity, church, or food bank in need of donations? Give gratefully and gladly whatever you can to help. Is the cashier at the grocery store tired and dejected? Skip the self-checkout and thank them for their work. Take small steps. Focus on each step forward. Let go of the burdens of the past and the worries of the future. You're not alone. Trust me.
