Summary[edit]
DescriptionBrighton Centre - geograph.org.uk - 211940.jpg |
English: Brighton Centre. Head south down Cannon Place which exits onto Kings Road between the Metropole and Grand Hotels then turn east. Past the Grand is the rather brutal Brighton Centre home to concerts, holiday on ice, Brighton Bears Basketball and party conferences. The building was constructed from 1974 and opened by then Prime Minister Jim Callaghan in 1977 the last part of the Churchill Square development that had been ongoing since 1965. That development ripped out and demolished everything between Western Road in the north, Kings Road to the south, West Street to the east and Cannon Place to the west. The Grand Hotel was threatened with demolition from 1961 but was thankfully saved and is now the only building remaining from pre 1965 within the area mentioned above. The centre has remained in constant use ever since its opening.
