English: Number 1 Sir John Rogerson's Quay (or “1SJRQ” as the new office block is marketed as) was a tram depot when Dublin docks were booming. It served an important function, in transport in an light-industrial and commercial hub, and is a notable reminder of the maritime heritage of Dublin. The building dates to the 1820s when there was some re-development of the quay and a deepening of the channel along this part of the River Liffey.
The 2010’s building has the historic tramway entrance, painstakingly restored. The tram depot extended from Rogerson's Quay along Creighton Street to the street Windmill Lane. Trams serviced the quay mainly transporting coal from ships berthed in the Liffey to the Gasworks on South Lotts Road in Ballsbridge. |
