For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
Berlin, Rotes Rathaus ADN-ZB Schneider 02-08-82 Berlin: Schöne DDR - Zwischen 1861 und 1869 entstand das heutige Berliner Rathaus nach den Plänen des Architekten Friedrich Waesemann. Nach dem verwendeten Baumaterial, dem roten Backstein, haben die Berliner das Gebäude von Anfang an Rotes Rathaus genannt. Nachdem es im März 1945 stark zerstört wurde, begann 1951 der schwierige Wiederaufbau des als Meisterwerk handwerklicher Baukunst geltenden Gebäudes.
