Summary
[edit]DescriptionBurnt Orchid (Orchis ustulata) - geograph.org.uk - 1314358.jpg |
English: Burnt Orchid (Orchis ustulata). This diminutive orchid (for idea of scale see 1314363) is the county flower of Wiltshire, with Parsonage Down, where this example was photographed, being one of the top sites. Its habitat is short calcareous grassland, although it is only found in a relatively few favoured locations. The English name refers refers to the coloured tip, which supposedly has the appearance of scorching - in the past they were known as Burnt Tip Orchids, for that reason.
For close up of flower see 1314394. At its base is a Chalk Milkwort (Polygala calcerea) another typical, although much more common, downland flower. |
