Description

THE BUSHMENS CONTINGENT FROM WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

The enrolment of the Western Australian Bushmen's contingent for South Africa was taken up with much enthusiasm throughout the colony, the applications being many hundreds in excess of the required number. This photograph, in which the small band of nurses attached to the contingent is given due prominence in the'foreground, was taken at Government House. Perth, on the occasion of the corps being entertained by his Excellency Sir Gerald Smith, on the eve of their departure for the front The Governor himself, dressed in grey, tall and erect, may be seen standing at the back, with Lady Smith to his left, and a number of Western Australian notabilities, including the Right Hon. Sir John Forrest, the Premier, and Lady Forrest, on either side.
