| Description |
English: From the antiquary market.
Ancient head of microcrystalline marble' Renaissance bust of grey-veined white marble. This portrait follows the main iconographic typology (Haupttypus) of the emperor Lucius Verus. The original dates to AD 160, while there are many copies, from all over the Roman empire, that may be dated to the period when Lucius Verus reigned with Marcus Aurelius (AD 160-161). The physiognomic characteristics of Lucius Verus are well represented here, and his image reflects the Greek ideal of beauty dear to the emperor. The sculpture is typical of some portraits produced in Rome with similar characteristics, such as the beard sharply divided in two, the long, curly locks and an intensive use of the drill, particularly in the hair. Thus it probably came from a Roman workshop. The highly-refined Renaissance bust may be compared with some Florentine works all'antica (after ancient models) of the end of the 16th Century. The grotesque mask in the form of a bat in the centre of the armour recalls the artistic environment of the sculptor Bernardo Buontalenti. |
