Description

Cérès en position assise et portant sur sa tête un vase de fleurs

Cérès est, dans la mythologie romaine, la déesse de l'Agriculture. Elle est représentée comme une belle femme à la chevelure abondante et entourée d'enfants car elle était assimilée à la nourrice des hommes.

Le parc des Monstres (appelé aussi Bois sacré ou Villa des Merveilles) a été conçu par le grand architecte Pirro Ligorio en 1552 à la demande du prince Vicino Orsini, le seigneur de Bomarzo.

Il est situé au pied du mont Cimino (dans le Latium, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Viterbe) dans un vallon parcouru par un torrent.

Le parc a inspiré de nombreux artistes, notamment surréalistes mais également Niki de Saint Phalle qui a réalisé son Jardin des Tarots à moins de cent kilomètres de distance.
