Description

"A" Bond viewed from (and through) the Ashton Avenue bridge in Bristol.

"A" Bond (1905) is one of three bonded warehouses that dominate the entrance to Bristol's Floating Harbour and the New Cut. "Bonded" means that imported goods (particularly tobacco) could be stored in them without excise duty being paid until the good were removed.

The Ashton Avenue Bridge or Ashton Swing Bridge (1906) was originally a double-decked swing bridge, carrying a road (Ashton Avenue) on the top deck, and a railway below. The roadway was removed after the construction of a new bridge in the late 1960s; the railway fell out of use as docks traffic declined, and the bridge is now only used by pedestrians.
